Millions of reasons would not excuse not to have been fast enough to announce our arrival in Didim, final destination in Turkey.
Opology required: I have not been able to connect my computer to internet. Only smartphone would work, and that was not enough
Never the less, WE MADE IT
Saturday morning at 7.30, we were calling the marina on VHF, asking for assistance to enter the harbor.
A rather windy northerly breeze was keeping us out, not knowing what to find inside the jetty.
Before that moment, we went through tough conditions indeed.
The night was terrible, but fast, VERY fast.
No question to sleep nor to enjoy our relaxing time. First with 1 reef and solent, the wind picked up and David needed assistance to reduce the sails. Thank him for waking me up.
1 more reef and the staysail were installed, and off we went, riding the waves at about 15kts average.
Was that a bis repetita of the night before?
I went back to “sleep” but after not more than 45 min, Loïc was asking me to come out again. We dropped the staysail as we were topping 20 to 22kts.
Back inside again for a short while: my watch was starting. David was not comfortable with the darkness, the high speed, the spray waters, the hard waves.
“No worries” did I say that? I tried to mean it, so David could get down below and relax. God it was tough. Totally wet, unable to see anything, and speeding at over 20kts with 2 reefs in the main only were not the condition to enjoy, specially for the last night, worried to destroy something (or a lot)
Loïc, in his bench could not sleep. Maybe worried, he called me to ask if things were ok. Did I lie? hmmm, maybe a little. No need to panic right ? But for sure, I was looking forward to the wind to drop, the daylight to come.
But before that, we were all 3 on deck, feeling the hard conditions, feeling how small we are.
Finally able to hold the course straight to Didim, we dropped the mainsail completely, and opened the staysail, alone, averaging 17kts or so.
2 hours to go now, so I went to lie down few minutes. A short while after, the wind dropped totally, so we hoisted the mainsail again (2 reefs).
David complained of course, but … hey, we both did all month, so, who cares.
Once the contact was made with the marina, they sent a zodiac, then a second one, then Ardic and Gunnar sent an sms to announce their arrival at the harbor.
I jumped on one of the rubber-boat to see where we should dock meanwhile Loïc and David were getting our own in case needed.
An amazing service from the harbor staff. We had 3 zodiacs dedicated for us only, with 2 people in each as well as a shore-crew to catch our mooring-lines.
A very professional help where nothing could go wrong, even though for an ORMA60 sailed by only 3 people. Thanks Didim Marina.
As soon as the boat was secured, we left to have a wonderful breakfast at the “royal yacht club”. God we enjoyed it. We then went to our hotel for a sleep, well deserved, until 4pm.
After that, back to the boat to clean, empty, organize, trash, secure, water before going to a nice restaurant for dinner, to celebrate our coming with “YASASIN” on the table. God it was nice ….. (my head did not like it though !!!!! but I think I”ll never learn)
